On June 3, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory hosted a gala concert dedicated to the anniversary of Soviet composer Aram Khachaturian. The concert took place on the eve of the 120th anniversary of the great classical composer, whose music united the traditions of Eastern and Western musical cultures.
The program featured works that brought Khachaturian worldwide acclaim: the Suite from the music to Mikhail Lermontov’s drama Masquerade, the Violin Concerto, and celebrated symphonic suites from the ballets Gayane and Spartacus. The concert was performed by the State Kremlin Orchestra under the direction of one of Russia’s most sought-after young conductors, Konstantin Chudovsky.
Passionate. Evocative. Vivid. Colorful. These are the words most often used to describe the music of this remarkable composer.
“I grew up surrounded by the richest traditions of folk musical life. The life of the people, their celebrations, rituals, sorrows and joys, the colorful sounds of Armenian, Azerbaijani, and Georgian melodies performed by folk singers and instrumentalists — all these impressions of my youth became deeply rooted in my consciousness,” Khachaturian himself once explained.
The explosive energy of the “Sabre Dance,” which instantly captivates with its sharp harmonies and whirlwind tempo; the tender lullaby of Gayane; the graceful melody of the romantic waltz from Masquerade; and the mesmerizing Adagio from Spartacus — Khachaturian had an extraordinary ability to convey an astonishing range of emotions and moods.
His talent for combining refined Eastern melodies and the fiery rhythms of the Caucasus with traditional European musical forms captivated audiences around the world. Whatever he turned his hand to became vivid, generous, and life-affirming. This music, full of sensuality, fire, and passion, offers audiences the luxury of uninhibited emotions and vibrant colors, drawing them into a spectacular and festive whirl of life.
Konstantin Chudovsky is a Russian conductor and winner of the Triumph Youth Award (2011). He is a guest conductor at the Bolshoi Theatre, principal conductor of the Ural Opera Ballet Theatre since 2019, and artistic director and principal conductor of the State Kremlin Orchestra since 2020. He graduated from the Gnessin State Musical College with a degree in Choral Conducting and from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory with a degree in Opera and Symphony Conducting, studying under Professor Gennady Rozhdestvensky. His repertoire includes more than 30 operas and ballets, as well as symphonic works.
Founded in 2019, the State Kremlin Orchestra is administered by the Administrative Directorate of the President of the Russian Federation. Its principal missions include participating in official state events and major public and political occasions, as well as promoting Russian classical music.
