Chinese Acrobatic Ballet “Swan Lake” (SWAN)

On September 20 and 21, the capital’s Live Arena hosted the premiere of an updated version of the spectacular ballet show Swan Lake (SWAN), performed by the Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe of China.

The renowned troupe’s tour was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and China and took place during the Cross Year of Culture between the two great nations, proclaimed by the President of Russia.

The production tells the story of the success of a young acrobat, Yu Meng, who sets out to unite the high art of classical ballet with the refined technique of the unique Chinese discipline known as “shoulder ballet.”

It is a story about the ever-evolving nature of art, which responds to the spirit of its time, embraces new trends, and welcomes bold ideas.

The show brings together several forms of performing arts, including dramatic theatre, European ballet, and the distinctive Chinese genre of “shoulder ballet.” This discipline holds a significant place in the history of world sports and is often described as “elegant” acrobatics, with frequent comparisons to ballet.

The triumphant rise of this genre in China began with Swan Lake in 2004 — a production widely acclaimed as a groundbreaking innovation that fundamentally transformed the established artistic paradigm.

The Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe of China was founded in 1959. The renowned company carefully preserves the traditions of Chinese acrobatic art while continually developing them, combining contemporary dance, rhythmic gymnastics, circus arts, theatre, and other forms of artistic expression in its productions.
