Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra — “The Four Seasons: From Moscow to Buenos Aires”

On September 27, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory hosted a concert by one of Russia’s most renowned ensembles—the Moscow Virtuosi State Chamber Orchestra, under the artistic direction of Vladimir Spivakov. The legendary orchestra presented an unusual program entitled The Four Seasons: From Moscow to Buenos Aires, featuring two cycles: The Four Seasons in Moscow by Efrem Podgaits and The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla. The concert was conducted by Arseniy Tkachenko, conductor of the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia.

The Four Seasons in Moscow, a concerto for violin and chamber orchestra by the renowned composer and music educator Efrem Podgaits, captivates audiences with its vivid imagery, sincerity, and broad emotional palette. It is not simply a continuation of the musical tradition established by Vivaldi and later embraced by Haydn and Tchaikovsky—it is The Four Seasons, Moscow-style. In the first movement of the cycle, the composer weaves in a quotation from Isaac Dunayevsky’s song Babbling Streams; in the second, a motif from Vasily Solovyov-Sedoy’s Moscow Nights; and in the third, a phrase from Eduard Kolmanovsky’s popular song It’s Raining in Our City. Only in the fourth movement does Podgaits refrain from contemporary allusions, instead using a theme from one of Vivaldi’s most beloved works.

Astor Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires (Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas) is undoubtedly one of the great hits of the late twentieth century and continues to be enthusiastically performed around the world. The cycle of four tangos by the Argentine composer portrays different periods in the life of a city dweller. This music is the soul of Buenos Aires: the coldness of loneliness and philosophical reflections in Winter; the intensely rhythmic and romantic Spring; the emotionally charged heat of Summer; and Autumn, filled with the intonations of longing and melancholy. Piazzolla masterfully combines a wide range of musical traditions, blending jazz harmonies with tango melodies and quotations from Vivaldi’s music with Afro-Spanish rhythms.
