JAZZ FROM WORLD CINEMA

On December 1, Pyotr Vostokov’s Great Jazz Orchestra will perform at the Moscow Conservatory. That evening, the musicians will present the program Jazz from World Cinema, featuring jazz versions of beloved melodies from both classic films and modern cinematic blockbusters.

Unusual arrangements of songs and instrumental pieces from such films as the James Bond series, Sun Valley Serenade, The Aviator, The Wizard of Oz, The Cotton Club, West Side Story, and The Jazz Singer will provide the perfect musical accompaniment to the first day of winter.

Pyotr Vostokov is one of the most talented musicians of his generation, having rapidly risen to prominence on the jazz scene. A participant in numerous jazz festivals in Russia and abroad—including festivals in Düsseldorf, Istanbul, Baku, Tbilisi, and other cities—he graduated from the Gnesin Secondary Special Music School in 2003 and the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music in 2009. He quickly established himself as one of the leading figures among the younger generation of Russian jazz musicians. Pyotr is already a featured soloist with three of Moscow’s most important big bands and is highly active on the city’s jazz club scene.

In recent years, Vostokov has performed with many of Moscow’s most renowned jazz ensembles, including Anatoly Kroll’s Akademik-Band, Viktor Livshits’ JVL Big Band, Igor Butman’s Big Band, the Oleg Lundstrem State Chamber Orchestra of Jazz Music, Alexey Kozlov’s Arsenal, as well as ensembles led by Viktor Yeponeshnikov, Ivan Farmakovsky, Vagif Sadykhov, Yakov Okun, Boris Frumkin, and many others. As a member of these ensembles, he has participated in festivals and concerts throughout Russia and has also performed in the United States, Germany, Austria, Finland, Switzerland, Greece, India, Turkey, Cyprus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Belarus.

Today, Vostokov leads his own Great Jazz Orchestra and is also a Senior Lecturer in the Pop and Jazz Department of the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, where he teaches trumpet and ensemble performance.
