Frédéric Chopin. Music of Love

On January 21, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory welcomed acclaimed pianist Filipp Kopachevsky, a laureate of numerous international competitions. Accompanied by the Moscow Chamber Orchestra Musica Viva, the talented musician performed famous works by Frédéric Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 and Piano Concerto No. 2, as well as Andante Spianato et Grande Polonaise Brillante. The orchestra was conducted by one of Russia’s most sought-after conductors, Konstantin Khvatynets, Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Moscow Operetta Theatre.

Chopin’s two piano concertos hold a special place in the composer’s oeuvre. Both were completed in 1830, after which Chopin never returned to the genre. A celebrated virtuoso pianist who captivated audiences with his impeccable technique and exquisite artistry, Chopin wrote his concertos accordingly: the piano takes center stage, while the orchestra primarily provides the musical backdrop. Despite their similarities, each concerto has its own distinctive character. Piano Concerto No. 1, although actually written second, has a more clearly defined formal structure.

Today, at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, held every five years, finalists are required to perform one of these two concertos, with the choice left to the competitors themselves. It is not an easy decision: both concertos enchant listeners with the beauty of their melodies and give pianists the opportunity to showcase their virtuoso technique and a broad palette of emotions.
